Potain introduces new special application crane

As demand for energy grows in Asia-Pacific, contractors are looking for equipment suited to the construction of power generation plants. One company providing a range of equipment for this work is Manitowoc Crane Group, whose Potain tower crane brand has launched a new special application crane particularly suited to dam construction and other infrastructure work.

Potain’s special application cranes are the largest available from MCG and are commonly found on bridge constructions, power stations, shipyards, dams and other large projects. The new crane in the product line is designated MD 1100 and is based on the industry leading technology used throughout the company’s product range.

Gerard Vezant, sales director for Potain special application cranes, said the company is now the recognized market leader in large tower cranes.

“The Potain brand is now the crane of choice on a growing number of power projects in the Asia-Pacific region,” he said. “This new MD 1100 will follow suit and will be of particular interest to the Chinese and Vietnamese markets where dam construction is gathering momentum. The crane has excellent lifting capabilities when fitted with a bucket which makes it ideal for concrete pouring on dam constructions.”

The first new MD 1100 is working for Chinese hydropower contractor Gezhouba Construction Group on the construction of the Keng Kou dam in Hunan province, southern China.

The MD 1100 can lift up to 50 t while its maximum radius is 80 m Maximum load at jib end is 10.6 t The MD 1100 uses 4 m x 4 m mast sections that are 5.7 m tall. These dismantle into 2 m x 2 m sections for easier transport inside a 12.2 m container. A compact counter jib of 24 m also features.

The MD 1100 can reach free-standing heights of up to 104.7 m when mounted on its 10 m x 10 m chassis base. As mentioned, the crane works well with concrete buckets of either 3 m3 or 6 m3 volume, allowing it to pour loads of 10 t or 20 t respectively. The crane can lift the 20 t load out to 50 m, which gives it a 10 m reach advantage over competitors in the same class. Hoist speeds of up to 46 m/s are achievable with these loads. Hoisting power comes from Potain’s 180 kW 250LCC winch.
