A Grove GMK6300 (GMK6350 in the US) was used to position two temporary bridges
for German national rail operator, Deutsche Bahn, over its ICE North-South
rail line 60 km (37 miles) south of Freiburg. Rental company MSG sent the
crane for the two-day job, which took place in January this year, as it was
best suited to the scale of the work.
According to Andreas Bruenig, project engineer at MSG, the most difficult part
of the lift was not the weight of the bridges as much as their size.
“The bridges weighed 43 t (47 USt) but measured 19.7 m (64.6 ft) long so we
had to position the cranes where they could unload from the transport and then
reposition the bridges on the temporary footings without any obstruction,”
Bruenig said. “This was especially difficult as the old bridges had to be
demolished and the set-up position cleared for the GMK6300. We rigged the
crane with 50 t (55 USt) of counterweight in the stand-by area and then
installed the rest when the crane was in its final position. There was even
more pressure on the job because everything had to be completed within a very
strict timeframe to ensure minimum disruption to the rail network. But the
Grove GMK6300 handled the work perfectly – so we were able to complete the job
on time and without any problems.”
The company worked under the direction of specialist contractor Zürcher
Railway Constructions to position the two bridges between 11.00 pm and 4.30 am
over a Saturday and Sunday. The crane will return to the jobsite in June this
year to remove the temporary bridges and help position the new permanent
bridges.
For the initial job in January the GMK6300 worked with 100 t (110 USt) of
counterweight and 37.9 m (124.3 ft) of main boom to lift the bridges at a
radius of 18 m (59 ft). MSG operates from offices in Kehl/Rhine and
Freiburg-Teningen and runs a rental fleet of 24 cranes, one third of which are
Groves purchased through local dealer Kranagentur Werner.
