Introducing Grove’s New Four-Axle All-Terrain Crane

Grove unveils its new four-axle all-terrain crane, the GMK4100 (GMK4115 in the US), at Intermat 2006. The crane is a brand new design and has a rating of 100 t (115 USt). One of the primary highlights of the crane is its new operator cab which boasts a modern design based around functionality, ergonomics, and comfort.

Features such as wide rear-view mirrors with new curved shaping, increase visibility substantially. Increased storage space inside the cab raises comfort levels, while the latest ECOS control system runs from the interior. The ECOS feedback screen allows the operator to monitor various internal and external conditions, including temperature, fuel, and battery levels and allows the suspension, differentials, steering, and level to be controlled. Error messages instantaneously highlight any change in conditions allowing the operator to react quickly, while the proven EKS 5 Light load moment indicator is also included. A radio with CD player comes as standard, as does temperature-adjustable air conditioning and heating.

The crane itself features a 52 m (170 ft) six-section boom with Grove’s patented MEGAFORM shaping for greater rigidity and its TWIN-LOCK pinning system for a lighter design. A 10 – 17 m (33 – 56 ft) bi-fold swingaway jib is available, while two additional 5 m (16 ft) inserts further boost jib length. A maximum tip height of 82 m (269 ft) is achievable with the jib attached and, as with all Grove all-terrains, the jib is able to hydraulically luff under load. The main boom has a telescoping time of less than 420 seconds.

The carrier’s drive is 8x6x8 as standard including independent rear and crab steering. An optional 8x8x8 drive is also available. The carrier is powered by a 295 kW (390 hp) Mercedes Benz engine, while the Mercedes transmission provides 16 forward and two reverse gears, combined with a 2 stage transfer case. On the superstructure power comes from a four-stroke, direct fuel injection Mercedes-Benz OM 904 LA diesel engine, which offers a power rating of 110 kW (147.5 hp).

The GMK4100 can travel below 12 t per axle when carrying 6.3 t (6.9 USt) of counterweight, together with the bi-fold swingaway jib, a 16 t (17.6 USt) hook block, and riding on 16.00 R25 tires. Up to 26.1 t (28.8 USt) of counterweight can be carried. Deliveries will begin in August.
