Grove Launches New Four-Axle All-Terrain Crane

The new Grove GMK4080-1 all-terrain crane.

Grove is launching a new all-terrain crane in January, the GMK4080-1 (which will be known as the GMK4100 in the US), the latest sign of Grove’s rapid pace of new product development.

The GMK4080-1 launch occurs just a few weeks after the launch of another new Grove all-terrain, the GMK5220 (GMK5275 in the US). A number of GMK4080-1s have been ordered with the first two destined for Grohmann, a German haulage firm. Philippe Cohet, executive vice president of Manitowoc Crane Group’s EMEA region, said the new model’s early success is no surprise.

“The four-axle AT market is a busy one and, as always, we respond to market needs with continuous product development,” he said. “The GMK4080-1 is very versatile, with compact dimensions, and is complemented with an excellent lifting chart and impressive reach. It is suitable for a variety of tasks, and will undoubtedly prove popular in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa region and beyond.”

This new four-axle 80 t (100 USt) GMK4080-1 has a six-section TWIN-LOCK boom, with new MEGAFORM shaping first seen on the GMK5130-1 (GMK5165-1 in the US), launched last year. Powerful lifting capabilities allow the GMK4080-1 to lift 6.6 t (7.3 USt) at a radius of 20 m (65.6 ft) with its boom extended to its maximum of 51 m (167 ft). With hydraulic luffing jib and 6 m (19.7 ft) extension, the crane has a maximum tip height of 75 m (246 ft).

As with most new Grove AT cranes, the GMK4080-1 is configurable in both ‘Taxi’ and ‘Maxi’ modes. In ‘Taxi’ mode, the crane remains within 12 t (13.2 USt) per axle while fitted with 9.3 t (10.2 US t) of counterweight, a 15 m (49.2 ft) hydraulic swingaway, a 16 t (17.6 USt) hook block and driving on 16.00 R25 tires. The GMK4080-1’s ‘Maxi’ configuration offers increased capabilities thanks to an extra 6 m (19.7 ft) hydraulic swingaway insert (which increases the maximum jib to 21 m (68.9 ft)) and a counterweight offering of up to 19.3 t (21.2USt).

The GMK4080-1 will replace Grove’s existing four-axle unit, the GMK4075-1, but it retains a number of design features of the popular model. The new GMK4080-1 features a driveline modified from the older model, including the same ZF ASTRONIC transmission and 290 kW (389 HP) Mercedes-Benz OM 501 LA engine. However, the GMK4080-1 includes a two-step transfer case, to allow better agility at lower speeds.

The dimensions of the GMK4080-1 show a front overhang of only 1.8 m (5.9 ft), making it 26.3 cm (10.3 inches) shorter than the GMK4075-1. Total length, meanwhile, is 12.5 m (43 ft), making the GMK4080-1 is shorter than its predecessor by 26.5 cm (10.4 inches).

The GMK4080-1 also offers eight different counterweight options, ranging from 1.8 t (2 USt) to the maximum of 19.3 t (21.2USt). The crane’s air-conditioned VISION cab is tiltable to an incline of 20º, and its multi-function remote control allows for convenient operation of the outriggers and swingaway jib. Other standard features include all-wheel drive and steer, MEGATRAK suspension, Grove’s ECOS operating system and an EKS5 Light, load moment indicator.
