Manitowoc 16000 Proving to be a Workhorse

A Manitowoc Model 16000 crawler crane is used to assemble a wind turbine.

Manitowoc introduced the 400 t (440 USt) Manitowoc Model 16000 crawler crane at CONEXPO 2005 to meet the growing need for high-efficiency, high-capacity crawler cranes. The 16000 fills a capacity gap in the Manitowoc product line, between the 272 t (300 USt) Model 2250 and the 750 t (825 USt) Model 18000. One of the first companies to take delivery of new crane was Ohio, US-based lifting firm All Erection and Crane Rental, which purchased four units. The first of these have gone to work on wind turbine installation jobs in Kansas and elsewhere.

The Model 16000 was built with this type of work in mind and has an optional pin-on upper boom point, with a capacity of 90 t (99 USt), designed for setting wind towers. The 16000’s basic boom provides 30 m (98 ft) of reach, which can be enhanced with a luffing jib on boom lengths between 24 m (78 ft) and 84 m (275 ft). The maximum main boom available is 96 m (315 ft), while the maximum allowable combination of main boom and luffing jib is 132 m (433 ft). Capacity with the luffing jib is 150 t (165 USt).

Like all Manitowoc crawler cranes, the Model 16000 is very easy to transport and assemble thanks to its modular design and Manitowoc’s patented FACT connection technology. The Model 16000 is strong enough to be a “rigger’s crane” and has enough performance features – such as line speed, line pull, travel, and swing speeds – to also be a “contractor’s crane”.

Manitowoc also offers its capacity enhancing MAX-ER attachment for the 16000. MAX-ER eliminates the time and expense of transporting and setting up a larger crane by offering additional lift and reach capabilities. The system retains the crane’s operational abilities while carrying any load within its rated capacity. The MAX-ER attachment can increase the Model 16000’s maximum boom length to 120 m (394 ft).

The Model 16000 boasts a line pull of 15.8 t (17.4 USt) and hoist speeds of up to 212 m/minute (697 ft/minute) on the main drum. Optional auxiliary drums offer line pulls of 15.8 t (17.4 USt) and 13.6 t (15 USt) respectively. Inside the cab, new EPIC dual LCD color monitors display important operational information through easy to read graphics, such as radius, boom position, and load-moment conditions.

The inclusion of such features is the result of MCG’s industry-leading engineering and extensive customer feedback, explains Allen Kadow, product marketing manager for lattice boom cranes at Manitowoc Crane Group.

“By listening, understanding, and tailoring equipment to end users’ needs, we feel we are able to keep up with the latest developments and trends and through this continue to offer some of the best standards of customer care in the lifting industry,” he said.
