End of year release for new Grove all-terrain

GMK5220

The GMK5220 will become the latest addition to Grove’s range of all-terrain cranes, with the new model scheduled to roll off the production line at the end of this year. Rated at 220 t (243 USt) and mounted on five axles, the GMK5220 will be able to handle loads of up to 13 t (14 USt) at its maximum boom point of 68 m (223 ft) and at a radius of 24 m (78 ft). The seven-section boom features Grove’s TWIN-LOCK pinning system and MEGAFORM profile for superior alignment and weight transition. It takes only 460 seconds to fully erect.

There is a 12 m - 21 m (39 ft - 69 ft) bi-fold luffing swingaway which can accommodate up to two 8 m (26.2 ft) inserts giving a maximum possible tip height of 105 m (344 ft). The jib can be hydraulically offset between 0 - 40 degrees using controls in the crane cab and lifting capacity on the jib is 19 t (21 US t).

Certain to make its mark as yet another of Grove’s superior lifting solutions, the GMK5220 is rated with a maximum load moment of 655 tonne-meters and has one of the best lifting charts in the five-axle all-terrain category. This is the result of the GMK5220’s ability to accommodate up to 77 t (85 USt) of counterweight – more than any other crane in its class.

The GMK5220 is powered by a 420 kW (563 hp) carrier engine and has a 170 kW (228 hp) superstructure engine, both from Mercedes-Benz. The carrier engine drives an Allison HD4060 transmission and the model features six forward and one reverse gears. The GMK5220 also includes Grove’s patented MEGATRAK independent suspension and has an ECOS operating system with an EKS 5 full graphic load-monitoring system.

Glen Tellock, president and general manager of Manitowoc Crane Group, said he had high hopes for the new all-terrain crane.

“Grove’s all-terrains are second to none and this latest GMK is truly one of the strongest in its class. It also offers a greater range of configurations – a result of significant end user input into the engineering of this crane,” he said. “The global market for all-terrains is very strong at present, and there is significant demand for larger cranes. With Grove’s reputation in the industry continuing to grow I’m certain the GMK5220 will soon take its place as the market leader in its class.”
