First Grove GMK5130-1 in UK goes to work for Midlands-based Dewsbury & Proud

The first of Grove’s new GMK5130-1 all-terrain cranes to be delivered in the UK

The first of Grove’s new GMK5130-1 all-terrain cranes to be delivered in the UK is now working for Midlands-based crane rental company Dewsbury & Proud. In all markets outside the US, including the UK, the crane is rated with a maximum capacity of 130 t, while in the US it is rated at 165 USt and is known as the GMK5165.

One of the first jobs for the new GMK5130-1 was the installation of a pressurized gas container in the tight confines of a soft-drink plant near Kegworth. For this demanding tandem lift, Dewsbury & Proud called in its other new Grove all-terrain, the 55 t (60 USt) capacity GMK3055. The 15 m (49 ft) long, 3 m (10 ft) diameter gas container weighed 22 t (24 USt) and was delivered direct from France on a special low-bed trailer. Working with 27 m (89 ft) of main boom, the GMK5130-1 easily handled the tank at a 12 m (39 ft) radius for the final positioning.

Tim Proud, director of Dewsbury and Proud, said the capacity and versatility of the Grove GMK made it an ideal choice for the project.

“This new five-axle Grove is a true state-of-the-art 130-tonner, with a very strong load-chart,” he said. “It has a full 60 m main boom with a 26 m fly jib, yet is very compact, making it very versatile. It can travel and set-up unassisted with a basic counterweight of 23.5 t, making it more competitive with cranes above and below its capacity – it is the ultimate big taxi crane, and in a class of its own.”

The GMK5130-1’s counterweight is one of its biggest selling points with 13 different combinations available from 1 t (1.1 USt) up to 40 t (44 USt). The six-section boom is also proving popular with end users with the GMK5130-1 capable of handling 10 t (11 USt) at its 60 m (197 ft) boom tip. An 11 m (36 ft) to 18 m (59 ft) luffing swingaway jib is also offered, which can be extended to 32 m (105 ft) with the addition of inserts.

The GMK 5130-1 also includes several of Grove’s patented features – MEGAFORM boom and TWIN-LOCK double boom pinning for superior lifting performance – and MEGATRAK suspension for increased maneuverability. The ECOS operating and EKS 5 load monitoring systems feature in the all-terrain as does Grove’s new tilting cab, which forms part of the GMK5130-1’s all new upperworks.
