Potain introduces Topless City cranes to US

Potain Model MDT 178
The Topless ‘City’ crane product line from Potain will be launched in the US at CONEXPO 2005. There are three of these cranes in the MDT City range and Potain has chosen the largest one, the MDT 178, to display at the Las Vegas trade show. The MDT City range combines key features from the Potain ‘MD City’ range together with lifting characteristics from its classic top-slewing MDT Topless tower cranes.

The MDT 178 has an 8 t (9 USt) capacity and is available with a 4.5 m (15 ft) or 6 m  (20 ft) chassis. Mast sections of up to 2 m (6 ft) can be fitted as required. At its maximum jib length of 60 m (197 ft), the MDT 178 achieves a jib-end capacity of 1.5 t (1.7 USt). The crane can provide an under-hook height of 55.8 m (182 ft) on a 4.5 m (15 ft) base with 1.6 m (5.2 ft) mast section, or up to 67 m (220 ft) on a 6 m (20 ft) base with 2 m (6 ft) mast sections.

A key feature of the Topless City tower crane range is their ease of set-up, a large amount of which can be carried out at ground level. The main mast-head section, complete with cab and controls, is a single factory-assembled unit which can be installed in one piece. An additional benefit is that only three pins are required to connect the main and counter jibs together. Plug-in connections for all controls, safety systems, and power connections further facilitate easy setup.

Once erected, the units offer reduced dimensions thanks to a design that does not require a cathead or tie bars. This makes them ideal for work in city centers. The other two cranes in the Topless City range are the MDT 98 and its sister MDT 128, with the same maximum capacity of 6 t (6.6 USt). Their jib end capacity is 1.2 t (1.3 USt) for the MDT 98 and 1.5 t (1.65 USt) for the MDT 128 at 55 m (180ft).

Clay Thoreson, director of Tower Crane Operations, Potain-Americas, says the models on display at CONEXPO reflect a growing interest in a wider range of tower cranes in North America.

“North American users have traditionally favored only larger tower crane units, but we’re definitely beginning to see that mindset change. Contractors are now far more receptive to the idea of tower cranes working on all kinds of job sites and are looking at a broader range of products. We are also expecting to get a lot of enquiries on the Topless City cranes. Their ease of erection and reduced dimensions make them a really cost effective lifting solution for downtown projects. With Potain, we offer the largest product range of tower cranes on the market.”
