Self-erecting cranes continue growth
 |
| Potain HDT 80 |
Two Potain self-erecting cranes make their North American debut at CONEXPO
2005. The
Igo 50, the largest unit in the Igo line-up, makes its first appearance on
US soil at the show. The Igo MA 21, meanwhile, is making its worldwide debut
at CONEXPO. Both units will be joined by an
HDT 80, one of the most popular self-erecting cranes in North America.
Self-erecting cranes are undoubtedly the fastest growing material-handling
product in North America, presently. Their small footprint, excellent reach,
ease of set up, and transportability makes them a hit with rental companies,
small contractors, and industrial sites. Self-erecting cranes have long been
popular on continental Europe on residential jobs and smaller construction
sites, and users in North America are employing the cranes on similar
projects, as well as finding alternative applications for these versatile
machines.
The Igo 50 can lift a maximum of 4 t (4.4 USt) while at its 40 m (131 ft) jib
end it can handle 1.1 t (1.2 USt). Height under hook for the unit is 23.2 m
(76 ft) and its footprint is 4.5 m x 4.5 m (14.7 ft x 14.7 ft). As with all
Igo units, the Igo 50 uses the company’s variable frequency controls for
optimum lifting control. Its 15 LVF 10 Optima hoist offers speeds which vary
with the load, reaching a top speed of 66 m/min (216.5 ft/min) in two falls of
line. It loads up to 1000 kg (2200 lb) at speeds of up to 33 m/min (108.2
ft/min) in four falls of line. Since its launch, many of the Igo 50 have been
sold throughout Europe.
The other new model on show, the Igo MA 21, is the second unit in the mobile
‘MA’ segment of the Igo range. These cranes are permanently mounted on a
twin-axle for optimum transportation. The Igo MA 21 has a maximum lift
capacity of 1,800 kg (3,968 lb) and at its jib end of 26 m (85.3 ft) it can
handle a maximum of 700 kg (1,543 lb). Maximum height under hook for the crane
is 19.3 m (63.3 ft) and its footprint is 4.2 m x 4.2 m (13.7 ft x 13.7 ft). It
features an 8 LVF 9 Optima hoist winch with a wide range of speeds reaching up
to a 36 m/min (118 ft/min) in two falls of line for a load of 700 kg (1543 lb).
The third model on show is the HDT 80 which first appeared in 2000 and has
been one of the best-selling self-erecting tower cranes of recent times,
proving popular around the world. It has a maximum load capacity of 6 t (6.6
USt) and a 1.35 t (1.5 USt) maximum at its jib end of 45 m (148 ft). The
three-section telescoping mast can offer jib heights from 15.6 m (51 ft) to
34.2 m (112 ft) with the jib horizontal, or a maximum hook height of 53.7 m
(176 ft) when the jib is luffed.
Clay Thoreson, director of Tower Crane Operations, Potain-Americas, says he
expects this year’s CONEXPO to generate more interest in self-erecting tower
cranes than ever before.
“With the increase in interest we are getting for the self-erecting machines I
expect us to be talking to a lot of visitors about how these versatile cranes
can improve operations on their projects. Potain has the most complete line up
of self-erecting cranes in the industry with models to cover a wide variety of
lifting applications. We’ve seen huge interest in the range over the past year
and I would expect 2005 to be even better.”
