Grove’s new long boom all-terrain crane premiers at CONEXPO 2005
 |
| GMK 5165 |
A new Grove all-terrain crane, the GMK5130-1 (known in the US as the GMK5165),
will make its first show appearance at CONEXPO 2005. Rated at 130 t outside
the US or 165 USt when sold within the US, the unit features an impressive 60
m (197 ft) six-section main boom, capable of handling 10 t (11 USt) when fully
extended.
The crane was officially launched at an Open Day held in December 2004 at the
Manitowoc Crane Group facility in Langenfeld, Germany, but CONEXPO 2005 will
be one of the first opportunities for the industry at large to get an in-depth
look at the new unit. The crane features an upgraded and improved five-axle
carrier from the similar sized 100 t GMK5100 (120 USt GMK5120B in the US),
which has been one of the world’s best-selling all-terrains of recent history.
The Grove GMK5130-1 has been designed with Grove’s Taxi-Maxi philosophy, under
which it can be configured as a ‘Taxi’ crane to travel to the job site in a
ready-to-work set-up or in a ‘Maxi’ configuration with additional
counterweight and support vehicles for optimal lifting capability. Different
counterweight combinations – 13 in total – make the GMK5130-1 ideal for rental
work, as the configuration can easily be adjusted to meet different axle
weight ratings for different countries or districts. The maximum counterweight
it can accommodate is 40 t (44 USt).
Grove’s newcomer comes with an 11 m - 18 m (36 ft - 59 ft) hydraulic-luffing
swingaway jib that can be extended with inserts up to 32 m (105 ft). Its
maximum tip height is 95 m (312 ft) and lift capacity at this height is 1.9 t
(2.09 USt).
Other features that help differentiate the GMK5130-1 include a new cab housing
Manitowoc Crane Group’s ECOS (Electronic Crane Operating System) and the EKS5
load monitoring system that enables the operator to monitor all key lifting
functions. Grove’s patented MEGATRAK suspension system is included on the
GMK5130-1 as well as its TWIN-LOCK boom pinning system and MEGAFORM
boom-shaping features.
