Potain, the world’s leading supplier of tower cranes, will celebrate the
delivery of its 100,000th crane at CONEXPO 2005 in Las Vegas, Nevada, US. The
landmark unit is a MDT 178 Topless City crane and will be one of the center
points of the Manitowoc Crane Group stand at the exhibition.
Glen Tellock, president and general manager of Manitowoc Crane Group, said
Potain’s historic delivery is an important accomplishment for the company.
“Everyone at Manitowoc Crane Group will be celebrating the production of the
100,000th Potain tower crane. Since its earliest beginnings the company has
strived to offer the best product and the fact it has reached this milestone
is a testament not only to the quality of the Potain product, but to the faith
our customers have in our service and our staff,” he said. “This demonstrates
the strength of MCG and is sure to be one major accomplishment of many more
from the company.”
Since its inception, Potain has grown into the market leader in tower crane
production. Today it manufactures a variety of cranes for applications on the
smallest job sites to the largest. Its product line is comprised of three main
categories: the GMA range of self-erecting tower cranes; the GME range of
top-slewing tower cranes; and the Special Application cranes.
The GMA range of self-erectors comprises the Igo, HD, Igo M and, HDM, HDT, and
GTMR product lines with maximum capacities ranging from 1 t (1.1 USt) to 8 t
(8.8 USt). The GME family comprises the City Crane, Topkit MD, Maxi MD,
Topless MDT, Maxi Topkit, and MR product lines with maximum capacities ranging
from 2 t (2.2 USt) to 64 t (70 USt). And the Special Application range
consists of the large MD models with capacities ranging up to 160 t (176 USt)
on the flagship MD 3600 unit.
Potain tower cranes are manufactured at seven sites located in four
continents. Potain has 12 subsidiary companies and distributes cranes through
a network comprising 150 dealers around the world. In addition to tower
cranes, the company produces a range of equipment and accessories for
construction sites and also manages one of the world’s largest used tower
crane sales networks.
The company was formed in 1928 by Faustin Potain as a manufacturer of
wheelbarrows, trestles, and troughs and other construction equipment. In 1932,
Potain made its first tower crane, setting the course for the company’s
future. Since that time Potain has recorded a number of notable achievements
and industry firsts, innovations that assure its market-leading position.
Potain cranes have worked on some of the most prominent construction projects
in the world including China’s Three Gorges Dam, the Millau Viaduct Bridge in
France and the rebuilding of the Bay Bridge between San Francisco and Oakland,
California.
In 2001 Potain became part of the Manitowoc Crane Group, thereby positioning
MCG as the world market leader in providing lifting solutions.
