National Crane helps Daisy Fuentes complete world's largest pink ribbon

A National Crane model 18142 crane was called upon recently to lift television personality Daisy Fuentes 45 m (150 ft) into the air in aid of breast cancer research.
A National Crane model 18142 crane supplied to Interboro Sign & Maintenance Co. by rental company Five Boro Boom was called upon recently to lift television personality Daisy Fuentes 45 m (150 ft) into the air in aid of breast cancer research.

Fuentes, whose mother is a breast cancer survivor, was hoisted up in a basket attached to the five-section telescopic crane to place the final 3M Post-it super sticky note on the world’s largest pink ribbon. The ribbon stood around 21 m (70 ft) tall on a billboard in Times Square, New York City, US and was constructed out of 75,000 Post-it notes.

“National’s 18142 model was the only telescopic crane of its size in New York City that could lift that high, yet work in a small area with limited access,” said Mike Johnson, district manager for Garden State Engine & Equipment, the company who sold the machine to Five Boro Boom. “It’s reach of over 43 m (142 ft) allowed the crane to be in and out of the job site quickly which was absolutely key as Times Square is so busy. The crew needed a crane that can breakdown and setup in less than 15 minutes. That’s exactly what the National machine provided.”

Specifications of National’s 18142 telescopic crane include a boom length of  43.2 m (142 ft) and the option of fitting a 7.92 m (26 ft) single-section manual jib to further boost height capabilities. The crane weighs in around 26 mt (29 USt) when fitted with a 1 t (1.1 USt) swinging counterweight, 378.5 liter (100 US gallon) tank of fuel and two people in the cab. It has a wheelbase of 6.5 m (21.5 ft).

The Daisy Fuentes event came as a result of 3M’s Office Supplies Division, the maker of Post-it super sticky notes, asking people to indicate they are ‘sticking up’ for breast cancer research by calling a toll-free number in the US or registering via the internet. Its goal of 75,000 names was reached in just one month as more than one million people signed up to show their support for breast cancer research.
