National Crane has announced the launch of two new boom trucks, the Series
500E and Series 600E. Improvements are not restricted to lift and reach
capacities; there are numerous innovations that make the machines both easier
to use and maintain. Customers have already taken delivery of several 500E
cranes and orders are pending for the 600E, which will ship soon.
According to John Lukow, vice president of sales at National Crane, the launch
of two new models in quick succession reflects the company’s proactive
approach to maintaining its market leader position. “We need to continually
look at our products to ensure they’re the best on the market,” he says. “Not
only to ensure we stay ahead of the competition, but also to ensure we’re
doing everything we can to help our customers get the most out of their
cranes.”
The two-model Series 500 E features a number of
advantages over other cranes in its class, notably a capacity increase to 15.4
t (18 USt). Boom length is 21.6 m (71 ft) and the extended boom is now the
longest in its category; meaning more jobs can be performed without the use of
a jib. The boom has a maximum vertical reach of 24.7 m (81 ft), which
increases to 36.9 m (121 ft) with the jib attached.
The Series 600 E
has also been designed with market-leading capabilities and is being made
available in five models, each offering a different boom and jib combination.
Capacity is set at 18.1 t (20 USt), and the boom extends to a maximum of 27.4
m (90 ft). Maximum vertical reach with jib increases to 42.7 m (140 ft).
Both models feature National Crane’s advanced variable displacement hydraulic
system. This is regarded as the smoothest on the market thanks to its constant
pressure control, providing flow on demand to optimize performance and deliver
power where – and when – it is needed. The result is not only effective
multi-function operation, but also smooth metering, regardless of load
demands. Available oil flow is further optimized by using gravity for ‘lift
down’ functions. A Hydraulic Capacity Alert (HCA) system is fitted as standard
on these new models.
Self-lubricating ‘easy glide’ wear pads,
standard on both new models, help reduce the conditions that can lead to boom
‘chatter’ and vibration, aiding smoothness of operation. Similarly, to
eliminate the problems of snagging reel or wire on obstructions, the
anti-two-block system has been fitted internally on the boom, dispensing with
the need for an external reel and wire.
To tailor the machines to
individual operator preferences, a control on the swing motor brake release
valve can be adjusted to match crane operators’ swing speed preferences.
Rigging changes are simpler thanks to the inclusion of a speedy reeve boom tip
and sheave blocks, while a ‘burst-of-speed’ winch can quickly payout and
pickup cable. An integral steel torsion box and flatbed is also offered as a
new option, which further reduces flex on the truck frame. Alternatively, the
customer may opt for a conventional flatbed option.
There are also a
number of new features intended to aid serviceability. The addition of a
removable winch allows the internal telescoping cylinder to be quickly
removed, without dismantling the boom. Further, bearings and cables inside the
boom can be easily greased via strategically placed service access holes in
the boom side plates. Additionally, National pre-paints its components, which
not only provides a higher quality finish but also increases corrosion
resistance.
