Model 18000 Arrives for Power Plant Work in South Korea
The first Model 18000 crawler crane from Manitowoc Cranes to arrive in Asia is
working on a power plant construction project in Kwangyang, South Korea. The
unit has been purchased by rental company Chunjo Construction Co Ltd and is
being used by general contractor Dae Lim to lift a variety of heavy structural
elements. The plant is an LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) terminal being built for
steel giant Posco to provide power to its Kwangyang Works – the largest steel
mill in the world.
The 750 t (827 USt) capacity Model 18000 arrived
on site in early June together with a six-man crew from Chunjo Construction
and Manitowoc Crane CARE. Following a rigorous erection and testing procedure,
the crane was ready for its first lift at the end of June. Its inaugural pick
was also its heaviest on this project, a 240 t (265 USt) generator – together
with 25 t (28 USt) of rigging – which was lifted at a radius of 15.7 m (51.5
ft). There were two of these generators lifted, each measuring 7.02 m (23 ft)
long, 3.68 m (12 ft) wide and 4.24 m (13.9 ft) high. Both generators were
positioned on piers standing 2 m (6.6 ft) above the ground.
Following
the generator lifts, the Model 18000 was used to lift two gas turbines, each
weighing 171 t (188 USt). These turbines were positioned inside large steel
framework modules. The Model 18000 is currently still on site and will also be
needed to lift heat exchanger coils, the largest of which will weigh 197 t
(217 USt). A total of 61 m (200 ft) of main boom and 27.4 m (90 ft) of luffing
jib have been fitted to the crane and it will remain in this configuration for
its estimated one year on site.
Chang Hwan Jang, president of Chunjo
Construction, says the crane has performed well to date. “We’ve been very
impressed with the Model 18000’s heavy lift capability but we’ve also used it
for a variety of smaller lifting tasks, so it’s really provided us with a
single solution for lifting duties on a large part of this project,” he says.
“Its ability to cover such a wide range of lifting duties combined with its
ease of transportation and relatively compact dimensions make it an ideal
choice for work on industrial sites such as this one.”
