Ness Crane Service Highlights Flexibility of GMK7450

Grove GMK7450 (GMK7550 US)
Taxi Crane rental firm Ness Crane Services is proud of its willingness to innovate and try new things. Not only did the Seattle, Washington-based company take delivery of the West Coast’s first 450 t (550 USt) heavy lift GMK7450 (GMK7550 in US) all-terrain crane from Grove, it is also completing more demanding lifting tasks. In its first few months of operation it has been kept busy on such diverse projects as lifting a natural gas pumping station into position; installing bridge piers; helping load 172 t (190 USt) pile driving rigs onto barges; putting up (and taking down) very tall tower cranes — and an extensive amount of ‘tilt-up’ concrete panels for commercial developments.

“As our customers learn that we have this heavy lift capacity, they are specifying larger concrete panels and tower cranes – or putting them further into buildings, knowing that there is now a lifting option that can cope with the increased requirements.” says Larry Ness, vice president of Ness Crane Service. “We could see that there was a trend for bigger lifts so we decided to ‘step up to the plate’ and invest in the GMK7450. This was a major purchase for us but we have been pleasantly surprised by the level of machine utilization since we took delivery.”

The GMK7450 has a maximum main boom tip height of 63 m (207 ft), increasing to 125 m (410 ft) with the 73 m (240 ft) luffing jib attached. The unit has a maximum working range of 80 m (263 ft) but its five-section, U-shaped, MEGAFORM boom allows numerous lifting options between 16-60 m (53-197 ft). The boom is electronically controlled, hydraulically positioned and mechanically pinned. The TWINLOCK boom telescoping system allows for pre-selection of 32 different main boom extension configurations for optimum strength and stability.

“We’re just a taxi crane company from 15 to 550 tons!” said Larry Ness, laughing. Most of his 30 or so ‘taxis’ are yellow and wear Grove insignia – and his biggest one, the GMK7450 has had fares that have taken it far and wide. It recently drove 136 km (80 miles) at 89 km/h (55 mph) from Seattle to Chehalis, Washington to install the natural gas pipeline pumping station. Highway driving on the GMK7450 is no problem, as it has Grove’s exclusive MEGATRAK suspension system, which features independent hydro-pneumatics with hydraulic lockout on all wheels. The suspension can be raised 170 mm (6.5 in.) or lowered 130 mm (5 in.) both longitudinally and transversely – and features an automatic leveling system for highway travel speeds. As Ness Crane’s field man Doug Sellers says: “The GMK7450 is easily configured to meet road restrictions, making it versatile for travel. It gives excellent lift and reach along with fast road speeds, all wheel steering, great mobility and all terrain capabilities.”

It is ‘tilt-up’ concrete construction that has dominated most of Ness Cranes GMK7450’s time, placing large concrete panels that form the walls of giant distribution centers. Ness is driven to grow this business and has volunteered to help trial any prototypes Grove may develop for tilt-up construction techniques using the GMK7450. In the competitive West Coast crane rental market, the GMK7450 is helping Ness Crane Services move from being a generalist to being a specialist heavy lift solutions provider.
