Brazilian giant signs 10 crane order with MCG
Locar, the largest crane rental company in Brazil, has placed a multi-million
dollar order with Manitowoc Crane Group for nine Grove all-terrains and a
heavy-lift Manitowoc crawler crane. A number of cranes from the order are
already with the firm while the remainder will ship over the course of 2006.
The order includes four 130 t (165 USt) GMK5130-1 cranes (GMK5165 in the US),
four 220 t (250 USt) GMK6220-L cranes (GMK6250-L in the US) and a 300 t (350
USt) GMK6300 from Grove (GMK6350 in the US). The heavy-lift Manitowoc crawler
is the 300 t (330 USt) Model 2250.
Julio Eduardo Simoes, president of Locar, said his company’s sizable
investment is based on reputation and representation.
“There is no question about the quality of Manitowoc and Grove’s products,” he
said. “The company, Manitowoc Crane Group, has developed these past two to
three years and is now a very significant presence in Brazil. We are expanding
our business to other Brazilian states and are making efforts to extend our
services into other South American countries. These new cranes will help us in
our expansion efforts.”
Locar has built its success on offering its clients the very latest lifting
equipment together with the best-trained operators in the business.
Camilo José da Silva, operations director at Locar, explained what features
most appealed in his company’s latest order.
“The standout feature on the Grove GMK6220-L is its 72 m [236 ft] main boom
plus its hydraulic luffing jib,” he said. “The technical assistance we
received from Grove with our other cranes was also a factor in purchasing
these GMK6220-L units as was the electronic system which is easy to use and
offers us greater control.”
The Model 2250 was bought because of its ability to generate revenue, da Silva
said:
“We’ve bought the Model 2250 as an investment. We saw the crane’s capabilities
and we didn’t want to use anything else,” he said. “We know we’re going to get
an excellent return on our investment with this crane.”
Locar runs a fleet of 200 cranes and has about 260 operators on its books, all
of whom receive training in-house. In addition to traditional training
methods, Locar is leading the way in terms of contemporary training. It
employs an in-house psychologist to analyze drivers’ methodology and utilizes
psychometric training - both in an effort to improve processes.
